Strong confectionery influences from Asia

Strong confectionery influences from Asia

Texture and presentation are vital qualities in Asian desserts- which is why today’s insta-generation are busy raising the profile of pretty eastern confections like rolled ice-cream, egg waffles and shaved ices. As youth populations across the globe seek chilled refreshments with maximum novelty factor to post online, cooks and consumers of all ages can be seen seeking out complex Asian flavours to stimulate the palate.

Move over Avocado

Late last year TV personality and food writer Nigella Lawson got everyone’s attention with her declaration that “Pandan is going to be the new matcha.”  The Celebrity Chef known to most simply as The Domestic Goddess claimed to notice that more people in America were baking with the tropical ingredient, and went so far as to liken it to the avocado in terms of its potential for mass appeal.

While Australia, with its high South East Asian population is already familiar with Pandan being used in desserts, Foodservice outlets across US and Europe can now also be seen incorporating the distinctive green leaf into a variety of sweets, snacks and drinks as predicted. Even the UK can be seen catching on through its prime-time TV series The Great British Bake Off, with many of this autumn’s contestants introducing Pandan to their signature bakes.

Packaged Pandan snacks for trend conscious buyers

One product in the Kinos range that can be seen getting the attention of big name retailers is their ‘Panda Bear’ Pandan flavoured cakes – a set of 24 soft centered, packaged sponges that are fashionably light green in colour. Kinos, a fully owned subsidiary of the UK’s largest domestic cake manufacturer London, distributes these fully halal certified confections globally, with by far their largest regular shipping being received by multinational retailer Tesco.
